Philips & eventIS Demonstrate 3D Video-On-Demand At IBC2007

"Philips and eventIS have successfully completed testing of 3D video-on-demand (VoD) using eventIS metadata system and Philips 3D displays.

This proves that the new 3D video format, based on ‘2D-plus-depth’, can easily be integrated into existing media distribution and management systems such as video-on-demand via cable, satellite, Internet or terrestrial broadcasting.

3D adds a new dimension to watching movies or TV programs, showing the world as it really is and making content richer, more immersive, and more exciting for the viewer. 3D-TV could become the next big thing in television. And given the recent developments in 3D screens, which mean that special viewing glasses are no longer required, efficient 3D content creation and media technology, such as VoD, it could all be in place within the next few years.

3D with Red Digital 4K Cameras

"A quantum leap in 3D content production and stereographic post-production from a tapeless workflow, resulted in a successful 3D test shoot and screening on Saturday, September 1st. Producers Steve Gibby and Kenneth Corben of GibCor, teamed up with their 3D production partners Max Penner and Tim Thomas at Paradise FX to produce one of the first stereo 3D shoots originating with RED 4K cameras.

GibCor provided RED camera #8 and their associate, Billy Summers, provided RED camera #13. Both were literally “out of the box” from the first 25 RED cameras released on August 31st. The team shot a 4K 3D dual camera test, and captured REDCODE RAW to two RED 8 GB compact flash cards.

The RED 4K cameras were fitted with a pair of RED compact zooms (18-50mm) and mounted to the Paracam. The Paracam is a 3D camera system that employs a beam splitter and has digital control of the inter-axial and convergent positioning of each of the RED ONE cameras.

The 4K 3D post workflow was seamless thanks to Assimilate’s SCRATCH Digital Intermediate Process Solution and technical support from Lucas Wilson of Assimilate. The 4K REDCODE RAW (.r3d) files were imported from CF cards into a beta version of REDCINE running on an Intel based Mac system. The left and right eye files were de-bayered from 4K RAW to 2K files then imported to SCRATCH as .dpx files. SCRATCH allowed for “plug and play” into Paradise’s dual projection system for quick stereo 3D playback."

Cinematographers and operators and can now view their scene directly through the lens of the camera without any lag or flicker using a new model SI-2K MINI with an integrated P+S Technik optical viewfinder for instant feedback of framing and focus. It is compatible with standard accessories for optical cine viewfinders found on other film cameras including viewfinder extensions, a flexible 10x wide-angle eyepiece, and a heated eye-cup. Currently being introduced with a B4-mount for 2/3” high-quality digital cinema optics such as those from Ziess, Canon, and Fujinon, the optical viewfinder will also be designed around a PL lens mount system in 1Q08 for 16mm and 35mm cine-lenses.

Silicon Imaging is also introducing a sharp 24-bit color OLED SVGA electronic viewfinder with adjustable diopter for the SI-2K and SI-2K MINI. Accepting computer VGA analog input and USB power, it is compatible with commercial display ports found on off-the-shelf PC and notebook computers. When used on the SI-2K the main interface can be displayed on the viewfinder screen while an additional HDMI port is available for independent secondary display and external monitor viewing applications. An optional voltage regulator cable enables applications involving higher-voltage inputs such as the Anton Bauer battery products and other professional battery systems.

An SI-2K MINI-Rig system comprises a number of ergonomic benefits for working with the SI-2K MINI system, and is composed of a highly modular set of building blocks to construct the ideal rig for each intended use. SiliconDVR features a number of enhancements in it's on-set production tool-set, including direct CineForm RAW recording to QuickTime and a new enhanced green and blue screen keying algorithm with easier end- user control and higher-precision results. User settings from the keyer are saved in IRIDAS's .look format and are compatible within the gamut of the IRIDAS SpeedGrade product line, enabling keys to be captured on-set and moved seamlessly to post.

Finally, a number of enhancements have been added to the camera control system including the ability for extended open shutters beyond five seconds to create light streak effects and also increase the sensitivity of the camera in low light with no gain increase, play-list scrolling within the integrated player unit for quick and easy review of recorded clips, an innovative user-definable multi-stage GPIO and right-click menu function, and integrated monitoring and control of fan speed settings, processor temperature, and battery voltage for the SI-2K camera system.

The SI-2KTM and SI-2K MINITM cameras along with the MINI-Rig system and OLED electronic viewfinder are currently available and shipping. The price of the SI-2K is $28,500, and for the SI-2K MINI is $17,500. The B4-mount version of the optical viewfinder system for the SI-2K MINI is slated for release in 4Q07 with a PL-mount version available in early 2008. The OLED electronic viewfinder with diopter and mounting assembly is $4,000."

EBU & SMPTE Announce Joint Task Force on Time & Synchronization

"The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) are forming a new Joint Task Force to examine and standardize future needs for timing and synchronization in moving picture and related industries.

Current methods of timing and synchronization for television, audio and other moving picture signals rely on standards that have been in place for over 30 years. Whilst these standards have proven to be robust solutions that served the industry well, they are predicated on technologies that are becoming increasingly inappropriate for the digital age with, for example, networked content sharing or higher frame rate HDTV image formats, and they now impose unacceptable limitations for the future.

The Task Force will begin by focusing on user requirements. Based on the input to be received from broadcasters, the media and entertainment industries, the Task Force will publish one or more Requests for Technology (RFT). The industry's responses to these RFT will subsequently be evaluated against the known user requirements. The outcome of this process will be a set of specifications that will be passed to the appropriate SMPTE Technology Committees for due process standardization.

The Task Force will be chaired jointly by Dr Hans Hoffmann of the EBU Technical Department, and Peter Symes, SMPTE Director of Standards & Engineering. It will adhere to an aggressive time schedule intended to publish the final specification by the end of 2008.

The first meeting of the Task Force will be held in New York on November 5 & 6 2007."
