Free Loudness Meter for Windows & Mac

Orban has introduced Version 2.7 of the free Loudness Meter for Windows (Vista/7/8) and Mac (OS X 10.6 or greater). The software adds two important new features: support for up to 7.1-channel surround, and the ability to analyse files in several common formats offline to measure their ITU-R BS.1770-3 Integrated Loudness and Loudness Range. This combination of new features allows any organization to qualify files, whether stereo or surround, for compliance with the Calm Act and EBU R128.

Like its predecessor, version 2.7 measures loudness using both the Jones & Torick (CBS Technology Center) and BS.1770-3 algorithms, displaying BS.1770-3 Short-Term, Momentary, and Integrated loudness in addition to the Jones and Torick loudness.



The metre also provides PPM and VU meters, and a "Reconstructed Peak" meter with an 8X-upsampled sidechain to predict the peak levels that will appear after digital to analogue conversion. This reconstructed peak metre exceeds the requirements of the "true-peak" metre described in BS.1770-3, which specifies a 4X-upsampled sidechain.

HEVC Demonstrates its High Efficiency

HEVC Version 1 demonstrates it has achieved more than 50% bitrate savings compared to MPEG 4 AVC/H.264, the MPEG standards group announced following its 108th meeting held at the beginning of April in Valencia, Spain.

In a verification test campaign of the HEVC, ITU-T Rec H.265 | ISO/IEC 23008-2 compression standard following the finalisation of the standard last year “a formal subjective quality assessment has been executed using a large variety of video material, ranging from wide-screen VGA resolution up to 4K. The material had not previously been used in optimizing HEVC's compression technology”, MPEG, announced in a prepared statement, adding: “Clear evidence was found that HEVC is able to achieve 50% bitrate savings and more, compared to the AVC High Profile”. The results will be made publicly available in the report N14420, to be published on the MPEG website.

HEVC's scope continues to be extended with a call for proposals on Screen Content Coding, the compression of video containing rendered graphics and animation. This extention is scheduled for completion by the end of 2015.

HEVC's 2nd edition includes support for additional colour formats and higher precision. The ‘Range Extensions amendment’, with technology allowing efficient compression of video content for colour sampling formats beyond 4:2:0 and up to 16 bits of processing precision has been finalised. In particular, the lossless and near lossless range of visual quality is more efficiently compressed than is possible with the current version 1 technology.

Web Video Coding the standard for a worldwide, reasonable and non-discriminatory, and free of charge licensable online compression scheme for use in browser has reached the final stage before approval. MPEG expects to complete the Final Draft International Standard in February 2015.

MPEG is also working on standardising what it refers to as ‘free-viewpoint television’. A public seminar on FTV (Free-viewpoint Television) will be held on July 8th to align MPEG's future standardization of FTV technologies with users and industry needs. Targeted application scenarios are Super Multiview Displays “where hundreds of very densely rendered views provide horizontal motion parallax for realistic 3D visualization, extracted from a dense or sparse set of input views/cameras in a circular or linear arrangement”.

“Integral Photography, where 3D video with both horizontal and vertical motion parallax are captured for realistic display”. And “Free Navigation that allows the user to freely navigate or fly through the scene, not just along predefined pathways”.

MPEG expects that future FTV systems will require new functionalities such as a substantial increase in coding efficiency and rendering capability compared to technology currently available. The FTV initiative will also consider novel means for acquiring 3D content that have recently emerged, e.g. plenoptic and light field cameras. The increases in spatial resolution and colour resolution, scalable coding and autostereoscopic 3D, or in MPEG speak Multi-view, leads to amendments in the trusty old MPEG-TS, transport stream layer. The amendment specifies transport of layered coding extensions for the scalable and multiview enhancements of HEVC, and the signaling of associated descriptors so that different layers can be encapsulated and transported individually.

To support the new standards to offer 4K/8K UHDTV services by using a newly developed MPEG standard, MPEG Media Transport (MMT) an effort to promote the new transport layer standard has begun in Japan with a growing number of companies implementing MMT for various applications. MPEG is organising MMT Developers' Day in conjunction with its 109th meeting this July in Sapporo, Japan.

MPEG is also working on 3D audio and dynamic range control. The DRC system provides comprehensive control to adapt the audio as appropriate for the particular content, the listening device, environment, and user preferences. The loudness control can be applied to meet regulatory requirements and to improve the user experience, especially for content with large loudness variations.

Technicolor Launches Second-Screen Synching App for Blu-ray, VOD, Broadcast

With tablet and smartphone use seemingly on a vertical trajectory with no end, Technicolor has decided to roll out a 'second-screen' app that pay-TV operators can offer to enrich their linear and/or video on demand (VOD) offerings.

Analysts say that up to 70% of consumers use a laptop, tablet or mobile device to supplement their home viewing experience, whether engaging in social media or browsing for more information about the program they are viewing. Technicolor MediaEcho makes that easier, by automatically synchronising that secondary content with whatever the consumer is watching.

Information offered at consumer fingertips include cast, crew and production information, historical facts, and ancillary audio and video for tablets that allow viewers to deepen their engagement with the program without cluttering the main screen.

The app can also enable integration of social media, so users can post comments, share content and connect during their viewing experience. MediaEcho can also help with top-line revenue generation, because it can enable e-commerce within the app, allowing fans to purchase items related to the program right from their tablet.

The synching is accomplished via Technicolor’s own audio watermarking technology, which inserts an inaudible high-frequency sound that allows the app to synchronise even in the presence of ambient noise.

Synchronisation of content also works with Blu-ray disc, a feature made possible through BD-Live technology to enable a two-way communication between any Internet-connected Blu-ray Disc player and tablet device.

The intial MediaEcho launch is for Apple iOS and Android.

Technicolor is not the first mover in the market: Miso recently launched the same type of app, inking deals with DirecTV and AT&T.

Minnetonka Audio Delivers New Low Cost Dolby E Plug-in

Minnetonka Audio Software announces a new SurCode for Dolby E product designed to work inside all common video post production platforms, including Avid’s Media Composer. The SurCode for Dolby E Stream Player plug-in provides real-time decoding of Dolby E streams and files to a stereo output.

Based on embedded metadata, the real-time downmixing of 5.1 to stereo is automatic, allowing the operator to concentrate on the task at hand. Downmixing is a true emulation of what a consumer equipped for stereo playback would hear. Since Dolby E is commonly used to simultaneously carry a surround mix, a stereo mix and/or multiple foreign language tracks, the SurCode for Dolby E Stream Player plug-in also lets the operator choose which program to decode and monitor within the range of available program configurations.

Visual indication of bit depth and frame rate are also provided, as is the display of all metadata extracted from the Dolby E stream or file. The plug–in includes the ability to save existing metadata as either a text or XML file, for archiving, workflow automation, and media asset management.

The SurCode for Dolby E Stream Player plug–in is compatible with the RTAS, VST, AU and AudioTools AWE formats, and is available from Minnetonka Audio Software online or at your local retailer. Manufacturer’s suggested retail pricing is set at US$995 for an all-platform license.

Neyrinck Extends Surround-Sound Support for Windows

Neyrinck, a developer of surround-sound tools, has released a software update for its SoundCode for Dolby E that adds support for Windows XP and Windows Vista. It also updates the feature set for Avid Media Composer and Apple Final Cut Pro.

Neyrinck’s SoundCode For Dolby E is a set of software tools to manage audio and Dolby metadata using Dolby E encoding and decoding and multichannel broadcast wave (MBWF) files with embedded Dolby metadata.

Now Dolby E streams are encoded to a workstation faster-than-real-time to a stereo WAV file. Dolby E layback is confidence-monitored directly in Pro Tools, and the resulting encode is delivered to a video facility as a file. Dolby metadata is embedded in a WAV file. File-based workflows are then implemented that carry Dolby metadata with the audio.

Pro Tools can import and export SMPTE ordered files larger than 4GB. Multiple programs are combined into a single audio file. Audio goes to and from the Dolby DP600 for faster-than-real-time Dolby E encoding.

Neyrinck’s version 1.1.3 software, available for both Mac OS X and Windows, is free-of-charge for existing owners of SoundCode for Dolby E, and can be downloaded from Neyrinck’s Web site.

Neyrinck Does Dolby

Neyrinck has introduced SoundCode For Dolby E, a stand-alone software package and Pro Tools plug-in set for managing Dolby metadata and Dolby E encoding/decoding. SoundCode For Dolby E is designed for post production studios, TV mixers, broadcast and content distribution organisations that need to deliver and monitor Dolby E content on videotape or as files.

The software includes two modules, the Broadcast Encoder and the Broadcast Monitor. At the heart of the Broadcast Encoder is the ability to encode a Dolby E stream file, or combine audio and Dolby metadata into a MBWF file for use by other systems. The Broadcast Monitor enables decoding of Dolby E streams, playback of Dolby E and MBWF files, and displaying Dolby E metadata from files or Dolby E streams. These functions are fully certified, professional implementations of Dolby E.

QSC Debuts New Digital Cinema Processor

A comprehensive digital cinema processor for both d-cinema upgrades and new installations, the new DCP 300 from QSC Audio Products will make its debut at ShoWest in Las Vegas. Forget 5.1 – Try 380 Theater Speakers

Just when the industry has begun to accept the idea of Digital Stereoscopic 3D movies, a new way to immerse the audience into the movie is introduced. Normally, a theater speaker system, whether at a movie theater or in a home, has a fairly small "sweet spot" where the sound from all of the speakers line up to produce a good experience. A system that was just installed in one of the Mann Chinese 6 Theaters uses 380 speakers to expand the sweet spot to two-thirds of the seats. The result is a richer and more expansive experience.

The technology comes from Iosono (pronounced ee-oh-soh-noh), and it was introduced at the SMPTE 2008 Tech Conference and Expo in Hollywood. SMPTE is the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, an organization that helps to set standards for Digital Cinema and Digital Television.

While the Mann Theater uses 380 speakers, the technology is flexible enough to handle 200 or 500 speakers to accommodate different theater sizes. The location of each speaker is measured with a laser and used to calibrate the exhibition player software. The speakers are arranged in three rows. The top and bottom rows are woofers, while the middle row is tweeters. Speakers form a ring completely around the theater, including behind the audience and screen. Unlike most theater speaker systems, this system can recreate the sound levels of a rock concert, and must actually be toned down for movie viewing.



The point is to make the audio appear to come not from speakers, but from different spots in and around the enclosed space. As with 3D video techniques, "wave field synthesis" technology creates not just the sensation of sound extending out from the screen -- which surround-sound techniques can also do -- but also the illusion of sources deep behind the screen's surface. It's also more precise than surround sound, and the listener doesn't have to be in the center of the room to get the full effect.

Up to 32 unique sound objects can be placed in a 3D virtual sound space in the theater. If one object was placed such that it sounds like it is coming from the 10th seat in from the left in the 10th row, people in the 5th seat will think it is coming from their right. People in the 15th seat will think it is coming from their left. This trick is illustrated using Iosono's Spacial Audio Workstation. By simply moving the mouse to position the object in the theater space the system adjusts in real time to match. The listener can feel the object move about the theater.

Sound can also be programmed to simply come from a "plane", for example, from the left wall. This mode is particularly nice if the movie score is expanded to make the orchestra's music come from all sides. The music is immersive, while characters speaking the movie are heard to come from the screen. The expanded sound adds more definition to the music and the voices and the experience is given added clarity.

Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands came up with the theory behind wave field synthesis about 20 years ago, but personal computers weren't powerful enough at the time to do the work. Dr. Karlheinz Brandenburg of the Fraunhofer Institut Digitale Medientechnologie in Germany took this research and expanded it into product form. Iosono, based in Hollywood, California, is now approaching studios and theater owners about taking their technology to the next step – deployment.

The company has at least one competitor, but Brandenburg said it's the first to deploy commercially. Notwithstanding any head start, it faces at least two significant hurdles. It has to persuade Hollywood studios to provide a 3D version of their movies' audio and it has to entice theater owners to invest in the required software, computer systems and extra speakers. That presents a chicken-and-egg problem -- theaters won't want to make the upgrade without a sure stream of movies with 3D sound, and the studios don't want to add 3D soundtracks unless there are theaters equipped to play them.

Uwe Karbenk, Iosono's CEO, does not want to talk about pricing just yet. Things are still a bit early, but they hope to have the first movie mixed for Iosono sound out in 2009. There are also some theme park venues that have already installed the system. And, the Iosono system can emulate a theater's 5.1 speaker system for regular movies.

Theater owners are constantly looking for ways to compete against the home theater system. Many see Digital Stereoscopic 3D as the solution where ticket sales on a 3D screen can be twice the take from a 2D screen. In the future we may hear of an additional weapon – a totally immersive sound experience. This sound experience coupled with Digital Stereoscopic 3D will be quite a treat, if the studios and exhibitors line up behind it.

And if the description of the system has you itching for 3D sound at home, Brandenburg counsels patience. The system's speakers must be mounted in a ring around the room, no more than about 6 inches apart. Even in a relatively small (12x12) living room, you'd need to hang more than 30 speakers on the wall, and there aren't any affordable flat-panel speakers that are up to the task today, he said. In other words, more technological breakthroughs will be needed before Iosono's products show up at Best Buy.
