DVB to Look into 3DTV

The DVB is to establish a working party to assess the emerging standards in stereoscopic and 3D television. “We are working on it,” the normally forthcoming Ulrich Reimers, chair, DVB technical module told delegates.

Broadband TV News understands that the DVB has established a working party under the chairmanship of David Daniels from BSkyB, one of the broadcasters leading the development of 3D broadcasts. Daniels and his group will investigate the technical environment surrounding 3D and its potential compatibility with HD transmissions.

According to the European Broadcasting Union there are currently at least six different approaches emerging for the broadcast of 3DTV. The organisation is planning a workshop in conjunction with SMPTE that will take place at its Geneva headquarters on April 30.
