China Market: Shinco, TCL Unveil 3D CBHD Players

China-based Shinco Electric and TCL, currently the only two vendors of China Blue High-definition Disc (CBHD), have debuted 3D CBHD players to compete with 3D Blu-ray Disc (BD) players in the China market.

3D CBHD players, with retail prices yet to be set, can support 3D TVs offered by several vendors such as Samsung, according to the China High-definition Disc Industry Promotion Association.

While Sony, Samsung and other vendors are offering their 3D BD players in bundles with their 3D TVs, the CBHD Special Interest Group is talking with China-based vendors of 3D TVs for bundled sales.

Sonic and RealD Align to Drive Home 3D

Sonic Solutions and RealD announced a strategic alliance to develop and release new consumer solutions for the home creation, publishing and playback of personal 3D video content, as well as the enjoyment of premium 3D entertainment. As part of the collaboration, Sonic is integrating the propriety stereoscopic RealD Format into its RoxioNow premium entertainment platform.

Once titles become available for online distribution, the RealD Format will be used to efficiently deliver Cinematic-quality, stereoscopic 3D entertainment directly to a broad range of connected consumer electronics devices. In addition, the RealD Format will be featured in Roxio consumer software applications for the creation and consumption of true-3D quality home movies. The new 3D-enabled products and services are expected to be available this summer.

The RealD Format is an enhanced version of a side-by-side 3D format that uses a unique set of filters and other technology that multiplexes a left eye and right eye 3D image stream into a single channel for delivery of high-definition 3D content using today's HD infrastructure to any 3D-enabled display type.

Sonic's collaboration with RealD is part of the company's Total 3D initiative, which is aimed at furthering the 3D home market through a range of 3D-enabled products and services for PC OEMs, consumer electronics manufacturers, and retailers. Earlier this year, Sonic unveiled professional tools for 3D encoding, authoring and formatting in the Blu-ray 3D format and released Roxio CinePlayer BD, a comprehensive, 3D-capable media player for Windows that recently received Blu-ray Profile 5 (3D) certification from the Blu-ray Disc Association. CinePlayer BD will ship on new 3D-enabled systems from ASUS and MSI later this year.

Sonic Launches 3DAccess for Blu-ray 3D

Sonic Solutions announced 3DAccess, a program that provides professional authoring facilities with the tools and knowledge required to prepare 3D premium video entertainment for distribution on Blu-ray 3D and electronically over the web to 3D-enabled consumer electronic devices. The program is part of a broader, company-wide initiative that is focused on enabling 3D access in the home and driving consumer adoption with a range of 3D-capable applications and services.

The 3DAccess program enables major motion picture studios and professional authoring facilities to meet the initial demand for 3D title creation by providing early access to new 3D-capable, add-on modules for Sonic's Hollywood-standard compression and authoring suites. Officially launching later this year, the new modules add 3D capabilities and controls to Sonic Scenarist, Sonic CineVision, Lemony and Scenarist QC and allow creative professionals to produce optimized 3D titles for distribution in the Blu-ray 3D format, as well as electronically via online movie services.

Sonic's professional encoding and authoring tools are used by more facilities than any other solution. With 3DAccess, Sonic hopes to jump-start 3D title creation in the same way the company ignited the market for entertainment on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. The 3DAccess program not only offers the complete add-on toolkit for 3D title creation, but also the in-depth training required to address the design challenges facilities will face producing 3D titles.

NetBlender Unveils 3D Blu-ray Disc Solutions

NetBlender announced that they are adding 3D encoding and authoring capabilities to their DoStudio line of professional Blu-ray tools. NetBlender is working with VSOFTS for DoStudio’s 3D MVC encoding capability and with Corel Corporation for the BD3D multiplexing capability.

NetBlender’s new 3D capabilities will be available options with the new DoStudio EX Edition, which will ship in Q2 2010 at an expected starting price of $4,995.00. DoStudio EX, which NetBlender is introducing at NAB 2010, also includes workgroup productivity features and offers customers the option to include third party interactive apps and bootstrapping for BD Live.

Sony Creative Software Unveils New Tools for 3D Blu-ray Disc Production

Sony Creative Software announced Blu-print 6 Blu-ray Disc authoring application and the brand-new Z Depth 3D subtitle offset editing application. As one of the first professional 3D Blu-ray Disc authoring products available on the market, the upgraded Blu-print 6 will be capable of authoring 3D titles in accordance with the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) 3D Blu-ray disc specification to greatly enhance workflow capability for production facilities and professional video editors.

Blu-print 6 allows for easy import of MVC encoded content along with support of 3D menu graphics and subtitle graphics. 3D Blu-ray Java integration also allows for user interactivity like BD-Live. To assist editors creating 3D subtitles, the new Z Depth application generates the required offset metadata file needed in a 3D BD project allowing editors to more accurately and easily position subtitles when creating 3D Blu-ray Discs.

Blu-print 6
As one of the first professional-level 3D Blu-ray disc authoring software systems available, the new features of Blu-print 6 will allow studios to author 3D content for the new 3D Blu-ray format standard Profile 5, import new MVC encoded streams, and work with Z Depth for 3D subtitle authoring. Designed for high volume professional production, the updated Blu-print 6 software will also include support for offset metadata integration required for 3D Presentation Graphics and 3D Interactive Graphics. 3D BD-J integration and 3D Blu-ray Disc cutting master generation is also supported in order to provide maximum intuition and flexibility for complex authoring projects.

Z Depth Feature Highlights
The all-new Z Depth subtitle offset editing application uses the video power of Vegas Pro 9 to provide a combination that will allow 3D authoring companies to easily create required disparity metadata files for positioning of subtitles and IG menus in a 3D Blu-ray Disc production. New to 3D BD production, the Z Depth application will allow 3D Blu-ray Disc authoring facilities and subtitle creation companies to produce accurate subtitling in the 3D space that will allow for the most comfortable viewing experience. The BD spec offset metadata files created by the application can be used in any 3D Blu-ray Disc authoring application that follows BDA specifications Profile 5. There are no special hardware requirements for Z Depth, though it is highly recommended that editors use the Presonus Fader Port for data input. Vegas Pro 9 is required for Z Depth integration.

Deluxe to Roll out 3D Blu-ray Prod'n Services

Following the recent string of 3D Blu-ray Disc player and 3D TV launches, Deluxe Digital Studios is rolling out 3D Blu-ray production services next month, with capacity ramping up to finish four movies a month by the fourth quarter.

"We are talking to just about every major content owner about bringing 3D content to market, and we expect to be working on at least a dozen titles by the end of the year," said Peter Staddon, senior vp worldwide sales and marketing at Deluxe Digital. "With Avatar and Alice in Wonderland being so successful in 3D, I think you will soon see virtually every major movie with a 3D component."

Already among the industry's largest providers of Blu-ray authoring services, the Deluxe Entertainment Services subsidiary now complies with the 3D Blu-ray standard that was finalized by the Blu-ray Disc Assn. in December. This standard enabled the recent introduction of 3D-capable Blu-ray players by manufacturers including LG, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony. The Sony PS3 also will support the standard. A 3D TV is required to view the stereo images.

"We are able to streamline the entire 3D Blu-ray supply chain for content owners, starting from the finished movie or television show and ending with fully approved 3D Blu-ray check discs and a project that is ready for mass replication and distribution," said Rob Seidel, exec VP and GM of Deluxe Digital.

The new Deluxe services include the design of menus and bonus materials, creation of subtitles, compression of video, BD-J programming, authoring, AACS copy-protection processing and player-compatibility testing. The pipeline includes proprietary systems and technologies, including a 3D subtitling tool and a BD-J 3D emulator.

"Our internal research and development team finished several of these tools in 2009, and we're completing the remaining development now," said Todd Collart, senior vp new media at Deluxe Digital.

Companies including Panasonic, Sony and Technicolor also have announced that they will offer 3D Blu-ray production services.

Winter Technology: 3D Blu-ray

Will 3D save the Blu-ray format? That's the optimistic forecast among home video executives -- and the impetus for what has become an aggressive ramp-up to create the necessary tools for 3D-enabled Blu-ray discs.

"Many people believe 3D is going to get Blu-ray a renewed life in the market," says Ahmad Ouri, head of strategy, technology and marketing at Technicolor. "There are mixed reports about how successful Blu-ray has been. 3D is one feature that is definitely going to differentiate Blu-ray from conventional DVD."

With 3D hits like Avatar priming consumers to want to replicate the theatrical experience in the home, industry momentum behind the format could not be stronger. Add to that the announcement in late 2009 of a 3D Blu-ray technical specification by the Blu-ray Disc Assn. Makers of 3D Blu-ray players and discs now share consistent underlying technology, enabling compatibility between products and sidestepping the potential for a format war. That convergence has lit a fire under the key suppliers readying to provide authoring, encoding and related services for the packaged media that will be needed to entice consumers.

"What was holding everyone up was the standard," says Jim Houston, vp technology and engineering at Colorworks, Sony Pictures' new post facility, which offers a 3D mastering suite. "There was no consistent platform on which to deliver the material. With a standard, there will be a race to get it done."

At last month's Consumer Electronics Show, several 3D-capable Blu-ray players were introduced. Many are expected to arrive in the market starting in the second quarter, from such manufacturers as Panasonic and Sony, which also is planning to offer support in its PlayStation 3 players.

"There is a fair amount of excitement -- it's getting pumped before the game," says Greg Gewickey, vp technology strategy at Deluxe Digital Studios. "A lot of people realize there is going to be a lot of work and uncertainties, but those kinds of challenges are exciting to the engineering community."

Such companies as Sony, Deluxe and Technicolor -- all of which are BDA members -- already are far along in their plans, which include third-party tools and in some cases development of their own techniques. Deluxe has been working overtime to update its tools to conform to 3D Blu-ray standards. "We have been active in doing that and talking with our studio partners about their expectations," Gewickey says.

Among the first 3D Blu-ray titles expected to reach the market are DreamWorks Animation's Monsters vs. Aliens, Sony's Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Disney's A Christmas Carol.

Sony's digital authoring center is planning for 3D Blu-rays to be released in early to midsummer, depending on manufacturers' schedules. "We have been doing significant testing with (Sony) Tokyo on encoding equipment as well as the authoring toolsets," says Tony Beswick, senior vp technical operations at Sony Pictures Entertainment. "We're seeing the possibility of bundled product that might be incorporated with consumer electronics equipment," he adds. "Then the bigger push will be toward the end of 2010."

Technicolor is working closely with the R&D arm of its parent company Thomson to develop tools it needs to be competitive. "3D adds a lot of complexity," Ouri says. "For instance, it is very important to place subtitles in areas of the frame where content doesn't block them. We are developing tools that automatically analyze each frame and different depth maps and automatically recommend where subtitles will be placed. We are also working on a real-time preview tool to see these decisions as well as to tweak them."

Jeff McDermott, vp R&D at Deluxe Digital, says the company is rethinking how to present standard Blu-ray features with 3D elements. "For instance, we could create a storefront and we can do a fly-around or flow-through," McDermott says. "Not just a CGI-created viewing experience, but a true depth-related viewing experience. It could be part of a menu design, game development or standalone bonus content. "That is a fairly advanced example," he adds. "We are not sure how much people will push for that in the first year."

Some industry talk has centered on the potential need for a separate master for a 3D Blu-ray (versus a theatrical release) in order to create comfortable depth for the different screen sizes and viewing distances. Colorworks' Houston views the notion of a separate master as a creative decision, not a necessity. "Any 3D movie that is transferred correctly will look fine (on a TV)," he says. "But there is the possibility that you will want to enhance the parallax for the home viewer with a smaller display."

Another factor insiders are examining is the time required to create 3D Blu-ray. Beswick points out that in the Blu-ray format's debut year, it often took 20-30 days to author a title. "Now we can author a title in days," he says, but the scenario could repeat itself with 3D. "Just the sheer fact of having to deal with the 3D subtitles, added value features, layers on the graphic overlays, menu design and the authoring and the encoding adds time to the project."

Companies are building capacity to handle the workload. "We have a Blu-ray authoring group already, so we can scale and shift our resources," Technicolor's Ouri says. "If we get more 3D titles, it is likely these will take the capacity that we would normally use for a 2D Blu-ray title. We also have an operation in India that does authoring for Blu-ray that could take some of the 2D work that we would normally do in Burbank."

Most companies believe there could be some growing pains in the process. "As with anything new, there will be a ramping up period this year," Beswick says. "In the first half of the calendar year there will be some capability constraints, but as it continues throughout the year, it will grow."

But the result of widespread 3D Blu-ray adoption would be a boon to the industry, which is still reeling from the decline of DVD sales. "The excitement is about scaling 3D," Ouri says. "The problem theatrically is the number of 3D-ready screens, so the reach to the consumer has been extremely limited. Blu-ray is going to be one way that all consumers will be exposed to 3D."

3D Blu-ray by the Numbers
- 43% - Percentage of U.S. adults who have seen a 3D movies in the past year and say they would prefer to watch movies and TV in 3D instead of 2D.
- 75% - Percentage increase in the number of Blu-ray households from 2008 to 2009.
- 25% - In 2013, percentage of all televisions sold that are predicted to be 3D-enabled.

Warner Bros., Technicolor Team Up

Technicolor and Warner Bros. will be joining forces in a strategic partnership for DVDs and digital media. Pact comes after the announcement that Warner Home Video Inc. is ending its contract with Cineram, its current DVD and Blu-ray disc manufacturer.

While the Technicolor partnership will focus on the replication and distribution services for DVDs and Blu-ray discs, the companies plan to also take their collaboration into digital media with a focus on future projects like 3D, technology standardization and licensing programs.

Union follows Technicolor's recent corporate relaunch. "I see this as a very strong endorsement of the relaunch of Technicolor," said Fred Rose, CEO of Technicolor. "It's a great start to the year showing that we are here and that we are a leader in the technical services of the movie industry, whether it is in digital or physical media."

Panasonic First Out of the Gate with Blu-ray 3D Authoring Facility

Following on the announcement of a broad range of Full HD 3D TV products, from VIERA consumer 3D TVs to a Prosumer Full HD 3D camcorder, at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Panasonic is now unveiling its fully operational Blu-ray 3D Advanced Authoring Center located at Panasonic’s R&D facility, Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory. The Advanced Authoring Center was recently upgraded and equipped with the latest 3D technological innovations, based on standards developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association. The Center now offers studios and filmmakers Blu-ray 3D image processing, interactive programming, as well as authoring and disc certification services, which are capable of making Blu-ray 3D Discs commercially available as early as Spring 2010.

Long before the Blu-ray 3D specifications were finalized within the Blu-ray Disc Association, Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory collaborated with studios and the creative community in Hollywood to conduct Blu-ray 3D encoding as well as menu and subtitle authoring trials. This type of early collaboration and research has given the Advanced Authoring Center expertise in guiding and advising companies during the key early planning stages of a Blu-ray 3D title.

Technicolor Brings 3D to the Home and Beyond

Technicolor announced several innovations to support the consumer electronic industry’s migration to 3D, including new technologies for Blu-ray 3D, broadcast 3D, 3D subtitling, and auto-stereoscopic 3D delivery to mobile handsets.

Technicolor will demonstrate the following at CES:
- Blu-ray 3D: Already a leader in the content preparation and replication of DVDs and Blu-ray discs, Technicolor has developed the first advanced compression and authoring solution to bring the recently released Blu-ray 3D specifications to production reality. Technicolor has expanded its capacity in anticipation of increased demand for Blu-ray 3D authoring.

- Broadcast 3D: Technicolor has built the first independent 3D broadcast facility located at its London broadcast location at Chiswick Park. The 3D channel is capable of transmitting both live and pre-recorded 3D content using a conventional HD channel. The solution is currently delivering content to a Technicolor HD set-top-box. The company is now ready to offer this service to its network service provider and broadcast clients.

- Automated 3D Subtitling Creation: Subtitles in 3D introduce unique challenges due to the number of various depths at which objects appear on the screen, thus creating limitations on where subtitles can be placed. Technicolor has developed a production tool that automatically recommends the best placement of subtitles to minimize disruption to the creative intent of the content.

- Auto-stereoscopic Content Delivery on Mobile: Technicolor will be showcasing its extensive authoring and compression expertise to deliver auto-stereoscopic (glasses-free) 3D experiences to mobile handsets.

- Theatrical Technicolor 3D Solution: In addition to the demonstrations listed above, Technicolor will be providing updates regarding deployment of its 3D on Film solution which was announced last year in September.

Panasonic Introduces Full HD 3D Technology

Panasonic will launch a complete line of fully-featured Full HD 3D VIERA Plasma HDTVs in spring 2010, at suggested retail prices to be announced at a later date. Models will range in screen size class from 50 to 65-inches; they include the TC-P50VT20 and TC-P50VT25 in 50-inch class screen size (49.9" measured diagonally); the TC-P54VT25 class 54-inch class model (54" measured diagonally); the TC-P58VT25 class 58-inch class model (58" measured diagonally); and the flagship TC-P65VT25 class 65-inch class model (65" measured diagonally); one pair of Panasonic 3D Eyewear is included in above models.

To create the best possible 3D picture, Panasonic has developed new, faster screen phosphors; coupled with its 600Hz sub-field drive, the new displays output alternating imagery at 60 frames per second to each eye. The brain then combines the images and interprets them as 3D.

With Panasonic's demonstrated "eco ideas" commitment to minimize the impact of its products on the environment, all new Full HD 3D plasma panels are designed with an effective screen half-life of 100,000 hours, or over 30 years of TV viewing, eight hours per day. To cut toxic waste when the television does reach the end of its life, all models are manufactured without using mercury or lead.

Panasonic's new 3D Full HD Blu-ray Disc player, model DMP-BDT350 outputs stunning, rock-solid, and immersive Full HD 3D imagery to compatible displays. The player also handles a wide variety of audio standards, and upconverts all standard definition video formats to 1080p. The BDT350 will also play standard Blu-ray Discs, DVDs and CDs.

DMP-BDT350 utilizes groundbreaking technologies incorporated in Panasonic's proprietary UniPhier LSI chip, enabling the player to flawlessly process the large quantity of visual information necessary to create a Full HD 3D image in 1920 x 1080 resolution. Curtain Rises on New Sony Blu-ray 3D Capable Models

Available this summer, Sony's Blu-ray 3D capable BDP-S770 Blu-ray Disc player is also compatible with DVDs, CDs, and SA-CDs. The model features an Ethernet jack and has built-in Wi-Fi wireless (802.11) with Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) for easy access to Sony's BRAVIA Internet Video platform and BD-LIVE functionality. Toshiba Expands its Blu-Ray Line Up with 3 New Models in 2010

Toshiba America Consumer Products expands its range of Blu-ray players with the introduction of three new players, the BDX2500, BDX2700 and the BDX3000. The BDX3000 will feature Blu-ray 3D capability for added entertainment.

With the recent announcement of the finalized Blu-ray 3D format specification, Toshiba will add the new BDX3000 Blu-ray player with 3D playback to complement the Toshiba 3D television products. The BDX3000 is planned to become available in the third quarter and adds 3D playback in addition to the full slate of features found on the BDX2700.

Company will Work with Panasonic Hollywood Labs on Menus, Extras, Games

Production firm Trailer Park has launched 3D Blu-ray Disc operations, following last month’s completion of the 3D Blu-ray specification. Trailer Park’s 3D activities will be run under the company’s recently launched Advanced Content Group, which is geared toward Blu-ray bonus features and interactivity. Collaborating with Panasonic Hollywood Labs, Trailer Park plans to develop 3D interactive menus, extras and games.

The Advanced Content Group also will utilize the expertise of Trailer Park’s Theatrical Group, which has already produced a number of 3D trailers for the big screen.

“Our goal at Trailer Park is to continue building relevant capabilities that reflect the changing entertainment environment,” said Rick Eiserman, the company’s CEO. “Our new Advanced Content Group stands on the bleeding edge in its ability to anticipate and implement new forms of creative, enhancing new forms of technological delivery systems, as they are developed and introduced into the consumer marketplace.”

Trailer Park’s push into 3D Blu-ray comes on the heels of authoring/replicator Technicolor similarly announcing that it is open for 3D business. Also, Testronic Labs said it was ready to begin quality assurance testing for 3D Blu-ray discs.

Testronic Laboratories Launches New 3D Test Lab

Testronic Laboratories, the global leader in quality assurance and testing services to the Blu-ray and Broadcast industries, has announced the opening of its new 3D Test Lab. Set to launch in the first quarter of 2010, the Testronic 3D Test Lab will be housed in the company’s 1st Street Facility, located in Burbank, CA.

The Blu-ray Disc Association’s (BDA) recent announcement of a finalized 3D enhancement to the Blu-ray specification has set the stage for the proliferation of 3D in the home this year. With dozens of 3D movies awaiting release on Blu-ray or in production, and broadcasters actively preparing to deliver 3D content, consumers are eagerly awaiting a true high definition 3D experience for the home that will do justice to what they have been enjoying in the theater.

Recognizing the inevitability of 3D in the home, Testronic Labs has spent the past year consulting with the leaders in the field, including major studios, broadcasters, hardware manufacturers, 3D technology pioneers and authoring facilities, to prepare test plans and procedures for the new technology.

“As a Contributing Member of the BDA, we were confident that 3D would make it into the home in 2010,” says Seth Hallen, President of Testronic Labs US. “We knew we had to prepare to meet our clients’ needs. Consumers Prefer 3D Content from Cable and Satellite Providers

In a recent online survey, over three-fourths of consumers said they would prefer to receive 3D content via their cable or satellite provider compared to those respondents who prefer Blu-ray/DVD, which was the second choice overall. Quixel Research, a market intelligence company focused on the Home Theater and Home Entertainment display markets recently published its second annual 3D Study, 3D Displays and Content 2009. The study surveyed 1000 HDTV owners online to quantify as well as qualify their opinions on 3D technology.

“Consumers not only prefer to receive 3D content from their cable or satellite provider but they are willing to pay more for a 3D movie channel,” stated Tamaryn Pratt, Quixel Research Principal. “Consumers are very familiar with recent 3D technology and those who have seen a 3D movie in the 12 months are interested in owning a 3D TV even if it requires glasses.”

The full study provides the most recent findings regarding consumers’ willingness to purchase 3D TVs and glasses, as well as accepted price points, 3D brands and 3D content types. The new 3D report is currently available for purchase.

A few data points covered in the study:
- 3D Product Awareness: 78% of respondents have had a 3D experience.
- 3D Interest/Purchasing: Half of those surveyed are interested in watching 3D at home, with those who have seen a 3D movie recently more interested in purchasing than the overall sample.
- 3D Timing: Over a third of those surveyed expect 3D TV within 12 months.
- 3D Content: Almost 1/3 would be interested in changing their content provider in order to receive 3D content.
- 3D Opinions: Almost 2/3 stated 3D is a group experience.
- 3D Glasses: Consumers are willing to pay for 3D glasses but don’t expect to pay twice as much for two pair.
- 3D Brands: Comcast was in the top 3 trusted 3D brands, along with CE manufacturers Samsung and Sony.

More Details on BDA’s Final 3D Specification

The Blu-ray 3D specification calls for encoding 3D video using the Multiview Video Coding (MVC) codec (ISO-MPEG-14496-10:2008, Amendment 1), an extension to the ITU-T H.264 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) codec currently supported by all Blu-ray Disc players. MPEG4-MVC compresses both left and right eye views, and can provide full 1080p-resolution backward-compatibility with current 2D Blu-ray Disc players.

MVC was developed by MPEG to support multiple simultaneous views of a subject. In general, an MVC encoder receives N temporally-synchronized video streams and generates one output bitstream. The decoder receives the bitstream, and decodes and outputs the N video signals. The video representation format is based on N views, and for stereoscopic 3D, N=2. MVC works by exploiting the similarities between multiple-camera video captures of a scene. By eliminating redundant information across camera views, MVC achieves a reduction in bit rate of approximately 20-25% on average, when compared to encoding views from each camera separately.

The new Multiview High Profile, as defined in the MPEG-MVC Amendment, uses the same coding tools as supported by the previous High Profile (HP) of the MPEG-4 AVC standard, which was already adopted into the Blu-ray Disc specification. Level constraints for this profile have also been specified so that fixed decoder resources of single-view AVC decoders, such as memory, could be repurposed for decoding stereo and multiview video bitstreams (MPEG-4 also defines a High Stereo Profile; it’s not immediately known which of these is specifically part of the BDA specification). Moreover, MVC is backwards compatible in the sense that one view (the so-called base-view) can be decoded from a part of the MVC stream by using a HP decoder, which could then be output on a conventional monoscopic display. An MVC decoder would generate multiple output views from the full stream and forward them to a stereoscopic or multiscopic display.

It often takes several years for an industry to develop and embrace a single standard, with "format wars" all too often the case. MPEG-MVC, while defined over a year ago, was rapidly adopted by the Blu-ray Disc Association nonetheless, and this haste shows how this emerging market is motivating manufacturers and content providers to get Blu-ray 3D products and content quickly out the door: expect the first products and titles sometime next year.

Blu-ray Disc Association Announces Final 3D Specification

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) announced the finalization and release of the “Blu-ray 3D” specification. The specification, which represents the work of the leading Hollywood studios and consumer electronic and computer manufacturers, will enable the home entertainment industry to bring the 3D experience into consumers’ living rooms on Blu-ray Disc, the most capable high definition home entertainment platform.

The “Blu-ray 3D” specification fully leverages the technical advantages of the Blu-ray Disc format to deliver unmatched picture quality as well as uniformity and compatibility across the full range of Blu-ray 3D products, both hardware and software. Notably, the specification allows every Blu-ray 3D player and movie to deliver Full HD 1080p resolution to each eye, thereby maintaining the industry leading image quality to which Blu-ray Disc viewers are accustomed. Moreover, the specification is display agnostic, meaning that Blu-ray 3D products will deliver the 3D image to any compatible 3D display, regardless of whether that display uses LCD, Plasma or other technology and regardless of what 3D technology the display uses to deliver the image to the viewer’s eyes.

The Blu-ray 3D specification is also designed to allow PS3 game consoles to play back Blu-ray 3D content in 3D. Additionally, the specification supports playback of 2D discs in forthcoming 3D players and can enable 2D playback of Blu-ray 3D discs on the large installed base of Blu-ray Disc players currently in homes around the world.

The completed specification will be available shortly and provides individual manufacturers and content providers with the technical information and guidelines necessary to develop, announce and bring products to market pursuant to their own internal planning cycles and timetables.

Broadcom Unveils First Single Chip Blu-ray Solution Supporting 3D

Broadcom Corporation announced that it is the first silicon provider to ship a true single die Blu-ray Disc chip. The new Broadcom BCM7630 offers an unprecedented level of integration combining proven optical front-end and back-end video decoding and display technologies in a single die solution.

Also announced is the BCM7632, which supplements the capabilities of the BCM7630 by adding support for the playback of 3D Blu-ray movies in stereoscopic full 1080p resolution. Although the 3D Blu-ray standard is not yet finalized, it is anticipated that the BCM7632 will comply with the final specification. The BCM7630 is in production. The BCM7632 is sampling to early access customers.
