PureDepth MLD LCD TV

"According to online reports 2008 will see the first commercial launch of Multi-Layer Display (MLD) technology in the shape of a 46in LCD TV collaboration between PureDepth and Samsung.

MLD technology is akin to the very en vogue 3D TV, but without the necessity of a big pair of specs. It works by placing two or more layers of LCD panels over a singular backlight source to create a moving image that has visual depth compared to the completely 2D effect created by a single layer LCD panel.

The technology has been developed for some time, but is only now starting to emerge in commercial applications. A collaborative effort, Samsung has apparently signed up to manufacture MLD-orientated mobile handsets while Sanyo will be looking after mobile, gaming solutions and automotive tech like satnav. The technology also has potentially interesting interactive applications.

No more info is available at the moment in terms of specs, release date or, crucially, pricing (expect it to be expensive though!), but we'll bring you more as we hear it."
