New Digital Vision Optics (DVO) Tools Debut at NAB

Digital Vision is unveiling new tools for its award-winning DVO (Digital Vision Optics) image processing software for digital finishing, restoration and re-mastering at NAB 2008.

Digital Vision’s DVO software now includes more than twenty tools for sharpening images, removing dust and drop-outs, changing and controlling grain, and converting formats. The tools are packaged into kits focussed on three areas of image processing: restoration, enhancement and conversion.

Visitors to Digital Vision’s NAB booth are getting the first look at four new restoration tools and the brand new conversion toolkit:

Restoration tools:
DVO Steady – The Steady tool, available at NAB, helps eliminate film weave, enhancing unsteady pictures originating from film scanning or camera shakes during capture. It uses an automatic two-pass solution to provide better separation between the unwanted instability and the pan/tilt movements from the original capture.

DVO Print Align – This tool, also available at NAB, uses a fully automatic process to align RGB separation prints, even if the offset varies over time.

DVO Scratch – Vertical scratch removal, planned for availability in Q3 2008, handles vertical/continuous scratches typically missed by dust and dirt removers. The process is fully automatic with an advanced detection and a fill-in result which is far superior to the normal process of hiding the defect using information from both sides of the scratch.

DVO Flicker – This tool removes random flicker and variations in brightness from sequences to produce a uniform exposure across an entire scene. It is planned for availability in Q4 2008.

New Conversion Toolkit:
Digital Vision introduces this toolkit to streamline content repurposing for DVD, film, mobile, or any SD/HD broadcast standard. It includes:

DVO Convert – Converts any broadcast standard to any other including generation of 23.98PsF from 50i and 59.94i. All processing is motion compensated so the media created is pristine, virtually artifact free, and ready for digital distribution. DVO Convert is planned for availability later in Q2 2008.

DVO De-interlace – Accurately creates progressive frames from interlaced video orginated material. The de-interlacer can maintain the fluid motion present in video (e.g. 50p delivery from a 50i source) or create a film look (e.g. 25p delivery from a 50i source). It is planned for availability later in Q2 2008.

DVO Rescale – Optimizes the upscaling of material, which is particularly valuable when converting from SD to HD. Digital Vision’s algorithm maintains high quality edges (particularly diagonals). This tool is planned for availability in Q3 2008.

DVO Retime – Designed for shortening or stretching programs, Retime enables the creation of varispeed material with control over the output speed using ramps/graphs, resulting in smooth changes from slow-mo to speed-up and anything in between. Availability is planned for late Q2 2008.

DVO Reverse TC - Automatically detects and removes 3:2 cadence from interlaced video sources, reconstructing the original 24 fps film frames. This tool is planned for availability in Q3 2008.

All DVO tools are available as software options to Digital Vision’s finishing systems—Film Master, Nucoda SD and HD, and can be licensed by third parties. They can also take advantage of Digital Vision’s new high performance render accelerator, Turbine, to enable real time 4k processing as well as the ability to run multiple 2k or HD projects in faster than real time.
