Philips 3DTV

Philips has developed an auto-stereoscopic 3-D technology, that is one that doesn't require glasses to resolve separate left and right eye images. It uses a tiny array of lenses carefully overlaid on an LCD panel to direct each eye to the subpixels rendered by a special chip and defined by the company's so-called 2-D+depth format.

Philips is selling a 42-inch display, a 3x3 display wall using the screens and tools to create stereo 3-D ads into this market. But the big kahuna is the digital TV market where some hope stereo 3-D is the next big thing after high definition. In an effort to jump start that market, Philips has licensed its technology to one unnamed module maker and is in talks with a second one.

"We expect LCD modules available to the mass market at the end of 2010 and TVs based on them sometime after that," said Martin Oerder.

Meanwhile, Philips is refining the underlying technology to meet the requirements of tomorrow's TVs. For instance, the current version only looks good in about nine viewable areas called cones. When watchers move between those cones, the image is blurred.

The next iteration of the technology will use fewer, larger cones and have smaller transition areas. It may also sport an ability to focus the lens arrays on a user's position by responding to a click of a remote or noticing their position with an embedded camera.

The lens arrays that enable stereo 3-D also degrade a set's resolution. So the upgrade will also sport an ability to switch off the lens array so 2-D content can be viewed at its full resolution.

Philips has also announced a 56-inch 3-D screen based on a so-called 4K display that shows a whopping 3,840 x 2,160 pixels. Even with the lens array, the display can show a full 1080-progressive picture, the gold standard for today's HD sets.

But the biggest challenge of all is getting Hollywood to adopt the Philips 2D+depth format. So far the company has no tools to create professional films in the format, though it is working on such tools and talking to third parties about developing them.

"I believe some day 100 percent of TVs will have stereo 3-D, just as today they all have color," said Oerder. "But it will take some time."

Barco Premieres Digital Cinema Projector for Screens up to 40 Feet

FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Certification Recommended for the Media Block of the Qube XP-D Digital Cinema Server

Qube Cinema, Inc. announced that the Media Block used in its Qube XP-D Digital Cinema Server has been recommended by InfoGard Laboratories for the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 Level 3 validation certificate. The FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certification for the Media Block is a key requirement of the DCI Specification. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) established the Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) that validates cryptographic modules to Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS).

This recommendation by InfoGard, the most experienced FIPS 140-2 laboratory and consultant in the industry, is a key milestone for Qube Cinema’s Qube XP-D digital cinema server in its path to full DCI Certification. The official NIST validation process is expected to take about six months. Qube Cinema will progressively update all Qube XP-D digital cinema servers in the field to the new Media Block. Starting December 2008, all new Qube XP-D servers will ship with this new Media Block.

Laser Cinema, Coming Someday to a Theater Near You - Maybe

The first laser TV is set to go on sale soon in North America, but engineers from the Academy of Opto-Electronics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Phoebus Vision Opto-Electronics, in Beijing, say they’ve already brought the eye-popping color of laser-generated images to the big screen with a digital cinema projector that uses lasers as the light source. The team combined several lasers with the MEMS technology used in digital projectors today. They describe the device in September’s Journal of Display Technology.

The technology “will be the next generation of cinema display,” says Yong Bi, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and chief technology officer at Phoebus, which is commercializing the projector. However, others in the industry question whether laser cinema will be ready in time and inexpensive enough to catch much of the market.

Bi’s projector replaces the white light and color filters used in today’s digital projectors with several red, green, and blue lasers. The lasers illuminate a digital micromirror device, a MEMS chip invented by Texas Instruments. The chip has an array of microscopic mirrors that each correspond to a pixel on the screen. The chip turns the pixels on or off by tilting the mirrors to direct light either toward or away from the screen.

Engineers have been interested in replacing the white light source and its accompanying color filters with lasers for years. Russell Wintner, consultant with WinterTek, a business, technology, and digital-media consulting firm based in Los Angeles, says the range of color that can be produced from lasers is the most attractive feature of the technology. “Lasers get closer to what the human eye can see than any other technology,” he says. “It makes for a much more lifelike image.”

Another advantage is that lasers are more energy efficient. Xenon lamps, the standard projection light source today, dissipate a lot of their energy as heat instead of light. In addition, xenon bulbs produce infrared radiation, which has to be filtered out so that it doesn’t damage the projector’s optics.

Despite these advantages, lasers have been considered too costly for digital projectors. Michael Karagosian, president of MKPE Consulting, a business, technology, and entertainment consulting firm in Los Angeles, estimates that a laser lamp could cost between US $10000 and $20000, while a xenon lamp costs just a couple of thousand dollars. However, he says, the energy savings could make a laser projector economically viable, particularly if mass production brings the cost down.

Another problem with lasers is “speckle,” a kind of self-interference that makes images shimmer and sparkle, says Bob Rushby, chief technology officer at Christie Digital. When a laser hits a rough surface, its waves reflect randomly and interfere with each other, either adding or canceling each other out, to produce bright and dark spots when the light reaches the viewer’s eye. Lasers are especially susceptible to speckle because they are “coherent” — their light is of one wavelength. Noncoherent white light is made up of many different wavelengths, so the interference is not visible. To reduce the speckle of interference, Bi and his colleagues used multiple lasers, each of a slightly different wavelength, to produce each color. This reduces the coherence of the beam so that the speckle is not visible, according to the researchers.

Rushby, who's firm makes digital projectors, says that while this technique does work, it doesn’t completely eliminate speckle, and he wasn’t convinced that an audience would not detect it.

“Speckle is an extremely challenging problem,” he says. “The method helps, but it is not yet suitable for theatergoing audiences.” Other techniques to reduce speckle include vibrating the movie screen or bouncing the lasers off rotating mirrors in the projector, both of which make the speckle pattern change so quickly that it becomes less perceptible.

Christie Digital is also researching laser projector technology, but Rushby would not give details on any potential products. “We believe laser has a future, but we have some problems to solve,” he says.

But if laser doesn’t come to the market soon, it may lose out to other technologies, WinterTek’s Wintner thinks. The industry is already starting to invest in white-light digital projectors, he says. And once theaters have made a huge capital investment in the projectors, they won’t be looking for a replacement.

“If you had [a laser digital cinema projector] working today and could demonstrate it, it would be huge. But in another two years, it might be too late,” he says.

The Path Towards 3DTV

Stereoscopic 3DTV could be the next home entertainment blockbuster, the logical sequel to today's high-definition flat-screen TVs. But the path to 3DTV winds through more twists and turns than the road to the Emerald City, passing through forests of alternative file formats, compression schemes, display technologies and patents.

Market analyst firm Insight Media tracked as many as 22 unique approaches to 3D displays, and it's still early in the technology.

No one has yet figured out a low-cost way to deliver stereo 3D to LCDs. What's more, many CE giants, as well as key technology providers of digital cinema, have yet to announce their products and directions for 3DTV. Others say any approach that necessitates glasses — a requirement for high-resolution 3D images today — will never be more than a niche with consumers at home.

Nevertheless, the hunt for a mainstream standard is on, driven largely by rising interest from Hollywood. At least four major industry groups have formed this year to plough a route forward.

"You are seeing a lot of overlapping activity here because everyone sees this problem," said Chris Chinnock, president of Insight Media, who helped found the 3D@Home Consortium, an ad hoc industry group.

Open Task Force
"3D pictures are showing good returns at the box office and as a result, studios want to put these movies into the home market," said Wendy Aylsworth, senior VP of technical operations at Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

Aylsworth is also VP of engineering for the Society of Motion Picture and TV Engineers (SMPTE), one of Hollywood's top tech groups. In July, SMPTE called for anyone interested to join a task force to investigate the possibility of defining a mastering standard for 3DTV content that could be carried over broadcast, cable, satellite, packaged disks or the Internet.

More than 160 people from 80 companies signed up for the first meeting of the SMPTE task force held last August. The group is expected to submit a report to SMPTE leaders within six months. A follow-on effort to draft a standard for 3D content formats could take another 18 to 30 months, Aylsworth said.

Andy Setos, president of engineering at Fox Entertainment Group, said he is not sure SMPTE is the right group for the job due to its historical focus on production issues. "We haven't identified the best forum for where this work can be done yet, and there could be an opening for a new forum," Setos said.

One alternative, the 3D@Home Consortium, which counts Disney, Philips, Samsung and Sony among its 30 members, aims to draft needs and requirements statements for 3DTV. "We hope to do a lot of the legwork for people like SMPTE," Chinnock said.

Sorting Out Issues
Separately, the Entertainment Technology Centre (ETC) at the University of Southern California (USC) has formed its own 3D working group chaired by a representative from Dolby Labs. It aims to define the core issues involved in driving 3D content into the home.

The work at the USC lab complements that of SMPTE's new task force, said David Wertheimer, executive director of ETC, which was the official test site for the digital cinema standard set in 2005. The USC lab, founded in 1993 by Star Wars director George Lucas, has backing from a number of Hollywood studios and a handful of technology companies.

ETC is asking vendors to install their 3DTV systems in its content lab "so studios can have a place in Los Angeles where they can bring their to-be-released content to view it using existing and emerging 3D displays, formats and technologies," said Wertheimer.

Europe hosts two government-funded 3DTV groups. The 3D4YOU program aims to define capture, coding and format specifications for 3DTV. Launched in February, it includes the BBC, France Telecom, Philips and Thomson. The OSIRIS (Original System for Image Rendition via Innovative Screens) Project, has gathered nine companies including Barco and Thomson to explore 2D and 3D projection technologies in a nearly $19 million program slated to end in December 2009.

The Blu-ray Disc Association is quietly working on its position on stereo 3D but has yet to make a public statement. Blu-ray discs could be the first way stereo 3D content is delivered to the home, because broadcast methods generally lack the bandwidth required to send separate high-resolution images for left and right eyes.

Whoever sets the content standard, it must be backward-compatible with today's 2D capture, production and display systems, said Setos. "We want to send one stream of bits and have it decimated for either 2D or 3D viewing, just as we are moving to sending out only HD video and letting terminals derive standard definition video from it."

Is It Time?
Beyond the content work, systems makers need to set standards for reading the formats and displaying the content on various kinds of TVs and devices. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has called a meeting to determine whether it's time for members to set a 3DTV standard that could cover TVs, STBs and Blu-ray players.

"I expect just about everybody who makes TVs, as well as some broadcasters, chipset vendors and 3D technology providers, will be there," said Brian Markwalter, VP of technology and standards at CEA. "We want to see if this is the right time to create a standard or not, and there are arguments on both sides."

Setos cautioned against display standards at a time when new technologies such as OLEDs are still emerging. "We don't want to preclude any display innovations," he said.

Optimists say industry standards could emerge in less than three years. Others fear it could take as long as a quarter-century—the time it took to move HDTV from concept to retailers' shelves.

"My big concern is about deploying something prematurely and having it fail—that's the big danger," said Setos. "It's a dicey game the outcome of which I can't predict, but we're putting a lot of energy behind it."

"The studios are calling the shots and doing a lot of subjective and objective testing in their labs," said Nicholas Routhier, CEO of Sensio Technologies Inc., one of many relatively small companies promoting unique 3D technologies. "The studios made the key decisions on DVD, Blu-ray and digital cinema" and it will be the same with 3DTV, he said.

With the rise of 3D movies commanding higher ticket prices at theaters "there is a lot of pressure building internally on the studios" to define 3DTV, said Ethan Schur, director of product marketing for TDVision Systems Inc., another contender to provide the underlying technology. "A year or so ago studios weren't that interested in the home market at all, but now these people have turned around."

Indeed, Insight Media has compiled a list of more than 80 3D movies recently released or in the works—including 3D versions of the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings series. Hollywood sees a lot of money being left on the table for premium home video versions of these films.

Animation studios such as Dreamworks and Pixar have said within less than a year all their new releases will include 3D versions. "They are already working with 3D databases, so it's relatively easy to render a stereoscopic version," said Chinnock.

Technology Shift
At the Intel Developer Forum in August, Dreamworks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg said stereo 3D marks a third era in entertainment technology, following the shifts to talkies and colour. Top Hollywood directors including Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Peter Jackson are working on live-action movies in stereo 3D.

"In the next few years they will make some of the best films using these new techniques," Katzenberg said.

3D live-action features such as Journey to the Centre of the Eart and concerts from U2 and Hannah Montana point to other possibilities. "Eventually you will be able to watch the Yankees vs. the Red Sox live in 3D at your local theatre," said Chinnock.

About 2,000 of an estimated 100,000 theaters worldwide can show 3D content today using technology mainly from companies such as RealD and Dolby Labs. Both companies are expected to launch 3DTV products for the home, but neither has made any announcement yet and both declined to be interviewed for this story.

In January, RealD hired Koji Hase — winner of a technical Emmy in 1999 for his work as chair of the DVD Forum which helped establish the DVD format — to be president of worldwide CE, charged with helping to launch a home products business for the company.

"What's happened in digital cinema will have an impact on the home, so RealD will have an edge," said Richard Doherty, principal of The Envisioneering Group, a technology consulting firm.

To date most big CE firms have stayed mum on the topic of 3DTV. "I think they see this as the next wave beyond HDTV, so it's strategic and they have stuff in the labs, but they want to keep quiet about it," said Chinnock.

"There is an attitude of wait-and-see; people are cautious," said Routhier, who has delivered development kits for the company's technology to eight TV makers.

Mitsubishi and Samsung have released early 3DTV sets working with technology providers such as DDD Group plc. They generally use an interlacing algorithm called "smooth picture," applicable to their DLP- and plasma-based sets. But smooth picture uses a checkerboard pattern of pixels that cannot readily be compressed and sometimes requires extra hardware.

More proprietary experiments are on the way, potentially pushing 3DTV sales from less than 300,000 in 2007 to 28 million by 2012, according to Insight Media. Plasma sets using smooth picture will represent most initial efforts, but once low-cost LCD methods are hammered out they should dominate long term.

With so many players, it's unclear who holds the key intellectual property for 3DTV. But if the technology becomes as pervasive as many predict, those patents will someday be a gold mine.

D-Cinema Firm GDC Rolls into U.S.

Readying itself for the ShowEast convention, Hong Kong-based GDC Technology, which provides servers for digital cinemas, has pacted with Christie Digital Systems USA. Christie will provide installation, maintenance and service support for GDC client cinemas in the U.S.

D-cinema is poised for rapid growth following this month's deal between exhibitors group Digital Cinema Initiative Partnership (DCIP) and five Hollywood studios.

GDC has recently been approved by two players in the U.S. D-cinema market. It was awarded "authorized vendor status" by Cinema Buying Group, a buying program for independent theaters administered by the National Assn. of Theater Owners. Meanwhile, its best-selling server has been included in the approved equipment list of AccessIT, one of the global leaders in D-cinema integrated solutions for digital cinema.

There are around 3,700 D-cinema systems in the U.S. and Canada, but that is set to grow by 10,000 in the next three years according to a co-financing plan agreed by DCIP and 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Walt Disney Motion Pictures, Universal Studios and Lionsgate Films.

ShowEast '08 Hasn't Been a Must-See

The trade show floor at exhibition confabs like ShowEast 2008 tends to be dominated as much by tech displays as popcorn-and-candy vendors these days. Gloomily, floor traffic appears down at both this year. Vendors blame economy-slackened show attendance and competition from off-site movie screenings.

At one point on Wednesday -- the second day of operations on the trade show floor -- staff at a huge Sony Electronics booth outnumbered customers by about six to one. The situation elsewhere on the floor wasn't much better.

Just off the trade show floor in nearby demo suites staffed by DTS, RealD and others, there was scant evidence of any influx of prospective customers.

RealD and Sony Electronics announced a new product partnership Wednesday, through which RealD's 3-D equipment will be more easily integrated into Sony's digital projection systems. And Korean manufacturer MasterImage drew a good response from its special morning demo of its portable 3-D system.

France's MK2 Makes 3-D Push

France's MK2 is taking its films to another dimension, with the Gallic distributor-exhibitor set to equip its theaters with 3-D technology as of Oct. 29, MK2 said Wednesday. MK2 will screen a 3-D version of Ben Stassen's animated film Fly Me to the Moon in seven theaters across Paris at Cinemeccanica- and ADDE-equipped theaters utilizing Barco and NEC projectors and Nuvision's 3-D system.

After Moon, the distributor will roll out more 3-D titles in 2009, including Disney's Volt 3D, Up 3D and Toy Story 3D, Paramount's Monsters vs. Aliens, Universal's Coraline, James Cameron's Avatar and Fox's Ice Age 3.

3DIcon Achieves Historic Breakthrough in 3D Imaging

3DIcon Corporation, a development-stage technology company, announced the completion of a working prototype of its proprietary three-dimensional display system CSpace. With CSpace, 3DIcon's scientific team has created one-color volumetric 3D images that can be viewed from any angle without viewing aids. 3DIcon's proprietary CSpace Volumetric Display System is a static-volume 3D display technology that does not require any special viewing aids like glasses. The system uses a clear volumetric image space, which serves as a 3D screen. The image space used in this prototype is a crystalline matrix with rare-earth up-conversion material. A 3D image is created when invisible laser beams are directed into the image space, exciting the up-conversion materials to create visible light and thus display a volumetric image. This prototype displays a one-color green image in three dimensions.

Live 3D in Your Cineplex

In June AccessIT announced plans to deploy its CineLive system, an end-to-end system to send live events into properly equipped digital cinema theaters. They are currently demonstrating it at ShowEast in Orlando, the key East Coast trade show for the entire film and electronic cinema industry which runs through tomorrow.

CineLive will transmit either 2D or 3D images from the event to CineLive equipped theaters. Initially, 150 theaters will be equipped for CineLive transmissions. According to Jonathan Dern, president of The Bigger Picture, a wholly owned AccessIT subsidiary, these 150 installations should be complete by the end of the year and the first CineLive broadcast is expected to be in Q1 of 2009. A test broadcast of a Texas A&M basketball game has already been done in cooperation with ESPN to about 18 theaters in (guess where) Texas. This initial broadcast was in 2D.

The initial 150 installations will be paid for by AccessIT and will be at no cost to the theater owner. AccessIT will recover its costs through the box office or other arrangements with the theater or content owner. According to Dern, these installations are targeted at the 100 largest US markets in order to provide The Bigger Picture with a national footprint. All installations will be in 3D-equipped digital theaters because The Bigger Picture sees 3D as a premium and profitable product. Both RealD and Dolby equipped theaters will be used. Dern expects the CineLive systems to go into additional theaters after the initial roll out of 150, but declined to discuss details of any future plans at this point.

Dern said that AccessIT and The Bigger Picture have had multiple special features in digital theaters but all that content had been pre-recorded. The normal channels into a theater used by AccessIT cannot handle live material and cannot handle 60Hz material. Since two expected types of live programming include sports and concerts, the motion rendition of the normal 24 Hz cinema material, as embedded in the DCI specification, would not be satisfactory.

The CineLive demonstration in Orlando included two sources of content: pre-recorded 3D content and live 3D cameras. With the live cameras, the content passed through the CineLive encoder and were decoded by a CineLive decoder at the TV sets used for the demonstration. According to B. Scott Cassell, vice president of operations at AccessIT, Miracube and SpectronIQ 3D LCD TVs were used to show the content in the AccessIT booth. These displays use the same type of passive polarization glasses used in cinema applications, according to Cassell. When asked about ghost busting for the RealD installations, Cassell said AccessIT was aware of the problem and was working on it but could not give any details at this time.

CineLive was initially announced at ShowEast in October 2007 and has been developed in conjunction with International Datacasting Corporation (IDC) and Sensio. Sensio provides the IP for the 3D encoding of the signal for 3D broadcasts.

3-D Will Conquer the Home Screen Last

The 3-D video bandwagon keeps rolling, with the announcement this week of Seiko Epson's new technology for small sized 3-D cell phone screens. I've seen demos of small 3-D LCD screens that don't require glasses, and frankly, they're much more impressive and ready for mass market than their living room-size brethren. This is one of several reasons why I predict 3-D will catch on for cell phones and media players before it catches on for big screen home TVs:

For cell phones in particular, people are already used to less-than-stellar picture quality, so the problems with current 3-D LCD technology seem more acceptable. Further, video viewing on these screens tends to be for much shorter amounts of time than for living room TV sets, so again the minor problems with tiny-screen 3-D are less annoying.

Additionally, the small cell phone screen has the problem of cluttering too much information into too little real estate, and 3-D offers a distinct advantage. The "Z-axis" can be used to separate information display at different depths, creating a more easily readable user interface.

Purchase duration and price are two more reasons why 3-D handsets will catch on much faster than TV sets. While the living room TV set is a major purchase for most consumers that typically is replaced perhaps every ten years or more, the handset is a far more transient purchase. Many cell phone users get a new phone every year or two, and some cell phone carriers in the U.S. even provide free replacement phones every couple of years.

This heavily subsidized pricing of cell phones further reduces the barrier to entry. When paying a couple of thousand dollars or more for a big screen TV, consumers will think long and hard about how much they want 3-D. But since the final cost to the consumer for a new cell phone is often between free and a couple hundred dollars -- with retail prices greatly reduced to the consumer through carrier subsidies -- handset consumers will be far more likely to take a chance with a 3-D display.

It seems clear that the non-glasses big screen 3-D LCDs will initially find their main market in digital signage -- at airports, train stations, in department stores, etc. They're eye catching, at least until the novelty wears off.

The polarized-glasses 3-D LCD technology, which in my view is indeed completely ready for prime time (based on demos I've seen) will most likely catch on initially with the same crowd that practically everything else in high-end home video has initially caught on with: The home theater early adopter film enthusiast crowd.

In any event, regardless of how this all plays out, in light of the world's economic woes, it's comforting to know video indeed has a new trick up its sleeve.

FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Certification Recommended for JPG2K Board in GDC Digital Cinema Servers

GDC Technology (“GDC”) is pleased to announce that the JPG2K media block in its family of SA-2100 digital cinema servers has been recommended by InfoGard Laboratories for Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 Level 3 Certification.

FIPS 140-2 is the security standard adopted by Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) to specify security-related requirements on physical security, software, interfaces, key management and cryptographic algorithms. InfoGuard Laboratories is an accredited Cryptographic Module Testing Laboratory under Code 100432-0 of the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP), a system set up by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for accrediting laboratories.

FIPS 140-2 Level 3 compliance is the highest security level specified in the current DCI requirements that protects the digital content in the servers from unauthorized access. The engineering team has worked hard to arrive at this important milestone for DCI compliance. The FIPS 140-2 recommended solution shall be the cornerstone of cost-effective, reliable and secured digital cinema systems accepted by all in the industry.

Lionsgate, AccessIT Sign Digital Screen Deal

Lionsgate has inked a pact with AccessIT to help fund thousands of additional digital screen conversions, becoming the fifth studio to sign aboard for the digital-cinema integrator's next wave of system rollouts.

AccessIT already has virtual print fee agreements in place with Disney, Fox, Paramount and Universal. So with Lionsgate now also aboard for its Phase Two deployment of digital theater systems, AccessIT boasts the same group of five studios backing another systems integrator -- Digital Cinema Implementation Partners -- and will turn its attention to securing bank loans needed to back up the studio funding and get hardware rolling into the marketplace. AccessIT helped implement an earlier round of about 4,000 screen conversions.

The integrator's Phase Two agreement with Lionsgate was announced at the ShowEast exhibition confab here, where earlier Tuesday a panel of d-cinema proponents hashed through the challenges of waging the digital revolution. Chief among them: an almost complete absence of bank credit currently. In their favor, both AccessIT and DCIP have a couple blue-chip investment firms representing them in their search for bank loans, and execs at both integrators suggest the turmoil on Wall Street will delay their rollout plans only a matter of weeks or at most a few months.

But most industryites believe AccessIT may encounter a longer wait for lender support than DCIP, as the latter represents the three largest U.S. circuits -- Regal, AMC and Cinemark, for whom it plans to convert some 14,000 screens to movie-quality digital projection over the next few years.

AccessIT's key relationship is with the Cinema Buying Group, a d-cinema consortium for smaller circuits who are members of the National Assn. of Theatre Owners.

"AccessIT has been a leader in shaping the digital cinema era of our industry," Lionsgate distribution president Steve Rothenberg said. "Digital cinema brings the highest quality viewing experience to audiences and provides the platform for 3D movies like Lionsgate's My Bloody Valentine."

The extra-dimensional horror pic is set to unspool on Jan. 16 in both 2-D and 3-D venues. Distributors hope for a rapid acceleration in the rate of digital conversions, so exhibs can take the next step of funding 3-D installations and make it possible to release films such as Valentine entirely in 3-D venues.

"We're at the one-yard line, but nobody is getting anything done until the credit crisis is over," AccessIT chief Bud Mayo said during the d-cinema panel discussion. "That includes us (but) my advice is to get in line now so that you're not left out."

Indeed, Fox's d-cinema chief Julian Levin said there's no time to waste for any exhibs thinking of joining the CBG to tap into AccessIT assistance for screen conversions.

"I don't know how long you have, but it may be only a month," Levin said. "And if you don't have something in place by then, you may be left off the train."

CBG hopes to assist in the conversion of up to 10,000 screens in Phase Two of the AccessIT rollout. Representatives of Sony and Warners are in talked with both AccessIT and DCIP, with those studios expected also to join in Hollywood funding of the digital revolution.

The various studios' VPF agreements collectively will result in distributors' paying for about 75% of the costs of participating exhibitors' digital conversions, Paramount exec vp operations Mark Christiansen estimated.

Studios will eventually see great costs savings by the move to digital distribution. But through VPFs they agree to keep paying the equivalent of film print costs for several years, so the money can be used to fund screen conversions.

DCIP and AccessIT seek bank loans simply to keep conversion capital flowing and to allow for the most rapid deployment of digital systems as possible. DCIP chief Travis Reid said his group expects to implement about 600 d-cinema systems per month once bank funding is secured.

Both DCIP and AccessIT also have plans to assist in overseas digital conversions, and the spread of d-cinema and 3-D projections has been even slower in many international markets, noted members of the panel moderated by The Hollywood Reporter's Matt Belloni.

"The number of 3-D screens internationally is about 200 -- very low," Christiansen said. That's not a happy situation for Hollywood, which plans to release at least a dozen 3-D movies in 2009.

Microspace: Cinema Via Satellite

Microspace Communications is aiming to change the economics of digital-cinema content delivery. The company -- which offers d-cinema content distribution via its Velocity satellite system -- reported that with about 340 theaters, 3,500 screen installations and future commitments, it has reached the mass needed to make its delivery service more cost-effective than the more commonly used method of delivering content to theaters via hard drives. Users essentially benefit from the economies of scale as the cost of using the satellite delivery system is the same whether a motion picture is sent to one screen or 500.

Microspace, a subsidiary of Capitol Broadcasting Co., recently inked deals with theater circuits including Allen Theatres, Mann Theatres, Marquee Cinemas and Ultrastar Cinemas.

"Our growth has extended a network that achieves the most cost-effective digital-cinema delivery method available," said Curt Tilly, manager of digital-cinema distribution at Microspace. "This is underscored by the partnerships we hold with eight major motion picture studios."

Arqiva Gets into Digital Cinema

Transmission specialist Arqiva has linked in a partnership with Arts Alliance to “pioneer new technology to enable the satellite transmission of digital films to cinemas”.

Arqiva says the move is seen as the future of cinema distribution as it eliminates the need to physically ship content on hard drives and manually upload them onto cinema servers and brings significant time and cost savings.

Arqiva has used its Content Delivery Network to distribute the 2008 Palme d’Or winning Entre Les Murs to Circuit George Raymond (CGR), one of France’s largest cinema chains. Working in partnership with Arts Alliance Media, Arqiva successfully delivered the full cinema package via the Intelsat 905 satellite direct to the library server at CGR Cinema’s megaplex site in Villenave d’Ornon, Bordeaux, France. The 216 GB file was transmitted and loaded onto the server without any operator intervention.

Rich Philips, Arts Alliance Media’s head of technical operations, said: “This important first for Arts Alliance Media has successfully established the capabilities of our Content Delivery Platform. Working closely with Arqiva and using their proven satellite expertise we have developed a viable satellite delivery platform for digital cinema content which offers tremendous potential for distributors and exhibitors.”

AccessIT Signs Agreement with Lionsgate to Receive Content and Virtual Print Fees for its Phase 2 Digital Cinema Deployment Plan

Access Integrated Technologies, Inc. ("AccessIT"), the global leader in digital cinema announced that leading next generation film studio LIONSGATE will provide movies to digital cinema equipped theatres in the Phase 2 digital cinema program and will pay virtual print fees (VPFs) under a long-term agreement. This agreement follows a May 8th announcement of a similar agreement between Lionsgate and AccessIT for AccessIT’s Phase 1 Digital Cinema Deployment Plan.

With a slate of seven digital cinema releases between now and the end of February, including Punisher: War Zone on December 5, The Spirit on Christmas day, Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail on February 20th, as well as its first 3D feature My Bloody Valentine on January 16, Lionsgate will be a major provider of high quality digital cinema features for early Phase 2 customers.

AccessIT’s Digital Cinema division is the industry-leading deployment program for Digital Cinema that provides the funding, installation support and administration for the company's studio-supported Digital Cinema rollout plans. Its Phase 2 plan for up to an additional 10,000 screens will provide networked, turnkey, Digital Cinema systems in conformance with DCI specifications, including AccessIT’s unique Library Management Server and Theatre Command Center software. Mitsubishi Adds Laser Light Source HDTVs

Revealed to an audience of journalists and industry observers at a World Premiere event in San Antonio, Texas last week, the 65" and 73" models were both straight off the production line and the only units in existence at the time. The 6-colour processor and LaserVue Light Engine at the heart of the L65-A90 and the L73-A90 produce twice the colour output of a standard consumer HDTV, which is almost twice the colour gamut for BT.709, the standard for HD content.

Both models boast 1080p resolution, "Plush1080p" up-conversion for lower resolution signals and 120Hz image interpolation, which Mitsubishi has named "Smooth120Hz". They have four HDMI 1.3a ports, three component inputs (two on the back, one on the front), a PC/DVI port (with dedicated audio-ins), a port for a stereoscopic 3-D glasses emitter, two RF antenna inputs and an S-Video input.

Technically, they are DLP sets, but physically, they are somewhere between a Plasma/LCD and a DLP set in size. They are energy-efficient too. The 65" LaserVue only consumes 135 watts. That is about a third of the power requirement of an LCD, and 25% of that required by a Plasma.

The quoted US retail price is a penny under $7,000.
